Young Players Striving for Honours!
Luke Vaggers (16) and Simon Johns (14) demonstrated at the Falmouth Sports Club last weekend that the future for squash in Cornwall is encouraging. Luke, from Truro, played the seasoned Bodmin player, Graeme Crowder in the STRIVERS final and the youngster played a powerful game to win 9/1 9/5 9/7. If he can place consistency before flamboyance more success will surely follow.
In the STRIVERS plate final, another Truro young player, Simon Johns triumphed over the ever reliable Siobhan Garland in a thrilling final. Arguably the County Women’s Champion should have closed down the match when she held two match balls in the fourth game. However the resilient retrieving of Johns paid off and this gifted athlete pulled away in the fifth game eventually winning 9/5 5/9 7/9 10/8 9/6. Said tournament organiser Terry Beckett “The Strivers is a competition organised by the County SRA that recognises that most players playing in Cornwall are not in the top fifty but still relish competition. The Strivers event is getting popular again and it is good to see an increasing number of younger entrants”
