Strivers Tournament Saturday and Sunday 18/19 January 2003
The Cornwall Squash Rackets Association ‘Strivers’ competition was held last weekend with sixteen players from all over the county traveling to Falmouth for the tournament which is for players outside the top fifty in the county squash rankings.
The main competition was won by number one seed, Ian Hatch from the Penzance Club, while the Plate Competition was won by Chris Lea from the Falmouth Sports Club.
Ian had a relatively easy path to the final, beating Mike Robinson of Bodmin, Matthew Pooley of Truro and Barrie Thomas of Falmouth, all in three straight games. The number two seed, Siobhan Garland of the Falmouth Club also made it to the final, beating Gary Lobb (Newquay) 3-0 in the first round, but she had a very tough match against fellow Club Player Graham Heard who played well and forced her to go to five games. In the semi-finals she dispatched Phil Ruffell of Penzance in three straight games.
The main final was very exciting, Siobhan took an early lead in every game but the determination and dogged retrieving skills of the Penzance player always brought him back into the game. In fact Ian fought back and saved four match balls against him in the fourth game when it looked as if Siobhan had the match sewn up. Ian went on to win the match by taking the fifth game, again coming back from a bad start! Ian Hatch beat Siobhan Garland 3-2 (10/9, 6/9, 2/9, 10/8, 9/7)
In the plate Competition, Mike Robinson (Bodmin) lost his first round match (0-3) to Ian Hatch (Penzance) while Chris Lea (Falmouth) also went down 0-3, to fellow club mate, Graham Heard. Mike then made his way to the plate final by beating Piers Guy (Penzance) 3-0 and Dave Matthews (Falmouth) 3-1. Chris beat Gary Lobb (Newquay), 3-1 in the second round and the promising youngster Jon Newton (Falmouth) also 3-1. The final was quite straightforward, hard hitting Lea unsettled his opponent by keeping the pace high and preventing Mike Robinson from executing his drop shots. Chris Lea beat Mike Robinson 3-0. (9/6, 9/0, 9/5)
