Strivers Tournament Saturday and Sunday 14/15 May 2005
The Cornwall Squash Rackets Association ‘Strivers’ competition was held last weekend with sixteen players from all over the county traveling to “The Garden Sports and Leisure Club” at Torpoint for the tournament which is for players outside of the top fifty in the county squash rankings. The main competition was won by the fourth seed, fourteen year old Rory Brickell from the Falmouth Sports Club, while the Plate Competition was won by Stuart Cox from the Torpoint Club.
There was a major upset to the tournament when the first seed, Robin Gordon of Helston, was put out of the tournament in the first round by one of the Torpoint hopefuls, Paul Lakeman, who beat Gordon in three straight games! Lakeman went on to beat Graeme Crowder (Bodmin) by three games to one before losing to Rory Brickell in the semi-final.
Brickell made his way to the final by beating Marcus Whitfeld (Torpoint), Lee Griffin (Bodmin) and Lakeman, all in three straight games, though Lakeman did come back to 8-8 in the second game. Dave Lashbrook (Launceston), a student studying at Plymouth, was also seeded 3/4 made hard work of his route to the final by beating Mike Robinson (Bodmin) by three games to one and then was almost beaten by the veteran Torpoint player Pete Debono who had match balls in both the fourth and fifth games! Lashbrook survived by beating Debono by three games to two, and seemed to find better form in the semi final on the Sunday to beat the number two seed, Mark Priem (Newquay) in three straight, but tough, games. The main final was very exciting, Brickell took an early lead in the first game and stayed ahead to win the first but the Hard hitting and determination from Lashbrook won him the second. Rory settled down in the third to keep the ball deep and tight and stopped Dave from getting a point! The fourth was a much closer game and Dave saved one match ball against him before leveling the score at two games all. Rory went on to win the match by taking the fifth game. Rory Brickell (Falmouth) beat David Lashbrook (Launceston), 3-2 (9/6, 3/9, 9/0, 8/9, 9/7)
In the plate Competition, the two finalists were both from the Torpoint Club, Stuart Cox lost his first round match (1-3) to the second seed, Mark Priem (Newquay) while Stuart Trumper went down 0-3, to Lee Griffin (Bodmin). Cox then made his way to the plate final by beating fellow club mate, Richard Hall 3-0 and then Gary Lobb (Bodmin) 3-2 in a tough semi-final. Trumper beat Marcus Whitfeld, also from the Torpoint Club, 3-0 in the second round and then Gareth Critchley (Helston) in a long semi-final which he won 3-2. The Plate final was quite straightforward, hard hitting Cox unsettled his opponent by keeping the pace high and preventing Trumper from getting into his rhythm for the first two games. The third was much closer, Trumper getting to level the score at eight all but was unable to win the game to let Cox take the match 3-0. Stuart Cox (Torpoint) beat Stuart Trumper 3-0. (9/1, 9/0, 10/8)
