Strivers Tournament Saturday and Sunday 4/5 March 2006
The Cornwall Squash Rackets Association ‘Strivers’ competition was held last weekend with twenty players from all over the county traveling to “The Garden Sports and Leisure Club” at Torpoint for the tournament which is for players outside of the top fifty in the county squash rankings. The main competition was won by the third seed, Mark Sykes from the Bodmin Squash Club, while the Plate Competition was won for the second year in succession by Stuart Cox from the Torpoint Club.
Mark Priem, from the Newquay Squash Club made his way to the final by beating Stewart Cox (Torpoint), fellow Newquay player, Gary Lobb, 3-1, and Mike Mayo (St Mellion) by three straight games in the semi-final. Seeded three, Mark Sykes made his way to the final by beating David Lorrimer (Torpoint), 3-0 in the first round. He then found himself two games down against Mike Robinson, also from Bodmin, after saving the third game 10/8 he won the match by default as Robinson retired. In the semi-final he beat second seed Peter Debono (Torpoint) by three games to nil. The main final was very exciting, with Sykes taking the first two games. With his back against the wall Priem found another gear and came back to level the score at two games all. The fifth game went right to the wire with Sykes winning 9/7 to take the match and the Strivers Shield. Mark Sykes (Bodmin) beat Mark Priem (Newquay), 3-2 (9/3, 9/7, 3/9, 2/9, 9/7)
For the second year running, the two Plate Finalists were both from the Torpoint Club, with identical players and the same overall result!!! Stuart Cox lost his first round match (0-3) to the first seed, Mark Priem (Newquay) while Stuart Trumper went down 0-3, to fellow club mate and second seed Peter Debono. Cox then made his way to the Plate Final by beating Simon Ramsay (Helston), 3-0 and then Tom Peters-Deacon also of Torpoint 3-0 in the semi-final. Trumper beat Gareth Critchley (Penzance) in three straight games and then David Lorrimer, also from the Torpoint Club, 3-0 in the semi-final. The Plate final was quite straightforward, hard hitting Cox unsettled his opponent by keeping the pace high and preventing Trumper from getting into his rhythm. Stuart Cox (Torpoint) beat Stuart Trumper 3-0. (9/5, 9/4, 9/5)
