Strivers Tournament Saturday and Sunday 24/25 March 2007
The Cornwall Squash ‘Strivers’ competition was held last weekend with thirteen players from all over the county traveling to “The Garden Sports and Leisure Club” at Torpoint for the tournament which is for players outside of the top fifty in the county squash rankings. The main competition was won by the first seed, Stuart Cox from the Host Club, The Garden Sports and Leisure, while the Plate Competition was won by fourteen year old Chris Lawrance from the Truro Club.
Three of the four seeds had byes in the first round, the remaining players played matches, the winners continued to compete for the Strivers Trophy while the first round losers went into the Plate Competition. First seed, Cox made his way to the final by beating Mike Robinson (Bodmin) and Graeme Crowder (Bodmin) both in three straight games. Seeded two, Tony Saxton (Bude), made his way to the final by beating two Torpoint players, Stewart Trumper and Luke Peters-Deacon, both in three straight games. The main final seemed fairly one sided, both players were hitting the ball hard but Cox’s retrieving skills got the better of Saxton who seemed to run out of ideas and made all the mistakes. Stuart Cox (Torpoint) beat Tony Saxton (Bude), 3-0 (9/5, 9/4, 9/4)
In the plate Competition, the two finalists were both Junior players, at twelve years old, the youngest entrant, Joel Brickell from the Falmouth Club, lost his first round match (0-3) to the Mike Robinson (Bodmin) while Chris Lawrance went down 1-3, to Stuart Trumper (Torpoint). Brickell then made his way to the plate final with a bye and then beating another junior player, Adam Green (Torpoint). In the other half of the draw, Lawrance also had a bye and then beat Paul Driver (Torpoint) in a tough five set semi-final. The Plate final was very exciting, with both the juniors playing good squash, Brickell went two games up but perhaps the strength of the older player had an effect as Lawrance took the next three games to take the match 3-2. Chris Lawrance (Truro) beat Joel Brickell (Falmouth) 3-2. (3/9, 8/9, 9/1, 9/5, 9/7)
